School of Chinese Medicine

Established in August, 1966. 

Traditional Chinese medicine has a history of several thousands of yeast. They developed its unique theoretic system included Yin and Yang, and the five elements. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the harmony between humanity and nature, and the balance between different systems and organs of the body.

Founding Goals

The School of Chinese Medicine aims to nurture proficient professionals by developing an enriched heritage of traditional Chinese medicine while placing emphasis on the integration of Chinese and Western medicine to formulate a new system of medical practice.


It is our goal not only to give and educate students specific knowledge and skills of Chinese and Western medicine, but to also provide them with all-rounded education for humanistic development.

Accordingly, the goal of education is to give students the specialized knowledge and skill in Chinese and western medicine, as well as rounded education for humanity development.

Course Description

School of Chinese Medicine has 2 programs:

  • Program A: Two-Licensed System (7 years)  
    obtain Bachelors degree upon graduation; eligible for both Chinese and Western medical doctor license examination
  • Program B: Single-Licensed System (7 years) – 
    obtain Bachelors degree upon graduation; eligible for Chinese medical doctor license examination only Courses in Chinese and Western medicine are taught in tandem.

In the history of medical education around the world, School of Chinese Medicine at China Medical University pioneers in the development of an integrative Western and Chinese medicine program, nurturing skilled medical professionals. Almost all of those physicians currently with completed integrative medical training, while at the same time, with qualifications for contemporary and traditional medical practice around the world today are graduated from this program. Today, these medical personnel are highly revered and are also very important to the field of health care.

In the recent decade, development of applications and research in integrative medicine has been a fast-rising new trend in the medical world. The government of the United States dedicates a large sum every year to basic and clinical research in integrative and traditional medicine. Top universities in the U.S. such as Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Michigan, University of Virginia and University of California, they have all established integrative medical centers or complementary and alternative medical centers. These all require professionals and scholars in the field of integrative medicine as trained by this program.

Within Taiwan, every university affiliated hospital and medical center have developed Chinese Medical Departments. Almost all higher administrators and chairs from Chinese Medicine Departments of major teaching hospitals are graduates of our program. The chief committee member of the highest ranked administrative government unit for Chinese Medicine and Pharmaceuticals in Taiwan have also been honorable graduates of this program for the past three consecutive years. Hence, it is important to reckon our enormous contribution to today's society and the crucial role we play in nurturing professionals to help in the development of Chinese and integrative medicine.

Future Prospects

To promote strategic partnerships in education and research, we actively work with renowned integrative medical centers and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) institutes around the world. In order to improve medical services and technology for the benefits of our people, we will continue to spread the knowledge of both Chinese and Western medicine, enhancing fundamental and clinical research, and integrating the essence of Chinese and Western medicine. 

Students graduating from School of Chinese Medicine can choose to apply for medical-related graduate institutes within or outside the country. Because this undergraduate Chinese Medicine program is being taught in counjunction with Western Medicine courses, students after obtaining their degree are qualified for Western and Chinese medicine clinical practice, and integrative medical and research duties.

Professionals specializing integrative medicine are currently highly demanded by medical institutions around the world, graduates could seek for further career development in America, Europe and many other regions.
